The titles of the works in I’m Baby (a series of infinite limitations) are drawn from the most popular baby names of 2005, the year Hammond’s son was born. They gesture toward themes of motherhood, identity, and cultural patterns. 

As a weaver dedicated to the creation of textiles, Hammond is deeply attuned to the relationship between labour and material. Each woven scrap and cutoff represents a moment in time—a tangible record of the weaving process. These remnants, often overlooked or discarded, hold particular value for her. With a focus on functional textiles that must be visually balanced from all sides, Hammond began reworking her unaltered handwoven offcuts into fabric collages. These compositions emerged slowly and intuitively, shaped by the availability of the right pieces over time.

Her work has long favoured utility: objects meant to be used. When she noticed that many of these new pieces echoed the dimensions of baby blankets, a question emerged—can an art series be baby blankets? That question gained deeper meaning in the context of shifting political landscapes, debates over newborn vaccinations, the resurgence of measles, her own transition into empty-nest life, and a surge of regressive, misogynist policy decisions.

The result is a body of work that quietly resists. It embraces softness, slowness, and care as radical acts. Hammond invites viewers to engage with the pieces physically and emotionally—whether they’re wrapped around a child or hung with reverence on a wall.

ARTIST BIO

Corrina Hammond is an artist specializing in textile design and hand weaving on traditional floor looms. Originally from the Kooteney’s and Calgary, she made her way to Vancouver British Columbia through Austin Texas.

Corrina earned her BFA in 1994 from Emily Carr College of Art and Design. Over the past decade Corrina has honed her weaving expertise, more recently establishing Domestic Intervention Company, a weaving studio in Vancouver’s Chinatown where she designs and hand weaves textiles and offers weaving workshops.

Corrina actively engages with community by participating in fundraising events for public art institutions, open studio events for the public, hand weaving demonstrations such as a live weaving event and textile talk at venues such as the Vancouver Art Gallery and the Heart of the City Festival.

Corrina’s extensive involvement in Vancouver’s art scene includes group and solo exhibits. She is a founding member of the Vancouver punk rock trio MAOW. Her visual art and music have garnered media attention, press support, and coverage in various publications.
