VANISHING
ARTIST
Alex Grunenfelder
I am an artist and designer based in Vancouver Canada, on unceded territories of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh First Nations. My work employs printed matter, performance, sound, olfaction and informal pedagogy to explore the perception of space, landscape, and the air as speculative objects. My projects have been exhibited in Canada, USA, South Korea and Switzerland.

PROJECT
Wildfire Air Report
Wildfire Air Report is a written sensory record of the atmospheric conditions on my balcony on 11 September 2020 during the height of the Oregon, Washington and British Columbia wildfires. This is part of a series of daily Air Reports published throughout the summer of 2020 and archived on http://airtasting.com. Through close attention to direct sensation, the project explores the ephemeral atmospheric phenomena that form our shared global habitat.
The Air Reports are performed within the context of Air Tasting, a practice of studying, presenting and facilitating experiences of the air. Since 2008 I’ve been leading Air Tasting workshops that employ a combination of observation, writing and discussion to engage people with the atmosphere as a form of embodied knowing.
